Even Start Family Literacy:
The 3 Rs of Family Literacy: Research, Readiness, and Results

The NESA Conference Committee is requesting proposals for workshop sessions at the 2008 National Even Start Association Conference.

Session Length: 90 minutes OR 180 minutes
Audience: Even Start Leaders, Practitioners, Local and State Evaluators, Partners and Collaborators

Guidelines:

  • All presenters and co-presenters must register for the conference. The lead presenter's conference registration fee will be waived.
  • All communication will be to the lead presenter by mail/email.
  • All session rooms will be set in rounds.
  • An easel and chart paper will be provided free of charge. Microphones will be provided in rooms with a seating capacity of 75 or more. Any additional audio visual needs will be charged to the presenter.

Program Design/Leadership in Even Start - How to support and improve programs; helping teachers to succeed; working with paraprofessionals; supervision across agencies
Working with Families in Poverty - Responding to the needs of parents and children; developing collaborations in support of families; family resiliency; family support systems
Public Relations and Information - Public relations that work; using the media to support the program; letting people hear the good news
Research, Evaluation and Assessment - Family Literacy: What we have learned; closing the achievement gap through family literacy; assumptions, struggles and promises; assessing continuous improvement of participant outcomes and program quality.
Parenting Education & Interactive Literacy - Actively engaging parents; coaching the adult learner
Adult as Learners - Understanding adult learning principles and strategies for engaging adults to meet their learning needs
English Language Learners - Cultural sensitivity and strategies for supporting the literacy development of English Language Learners.

1. Please describe how your presentation supports the purpose of the William F. Goodling Even Start Family Literacy Programs as described in Statute:

"…improving the educational opportunities of the Nation's low-income families by integrating early childhood education, adult literacy or adult basic education, and parenting education into a unified family literacy program"

2. Outline the learning objectives for your presentation.

3. Please describe how your presentation addresses the integration of components with an emphasis on one or more of the following areas.

  1. Interactive literacy activities between parents and their children.
  2. Training for parents regarding how to be the primary teacher for their children and full partners in the education of their children.
  3. Parent literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency.
  4. An age-appropriate education to prepare children for success in school and life experiences.

5. Describe the presenters' expertise or experience in Even Start Family Literacy.
