The mission of the National Even Start Association is to
Provide a National Voice and Vision for Even Start Family Literacy Programs.
The National Even Start Association is committed to supporting
approximately 800 sites across the US in their efforts to provide high
quality programming for approximately one million parents and children
and:

To extend learning, enrich language development and
support high levels of success for children birth to age seven and
their families.

To break the cycle of limited literacy, under-employment
and high mobility of participating families by building literacy
skills in both parents and children.

To provided 'simultaneous' services for families,
where parents and their children learn together.
This builds support for parents to succeed with their educational
and employment goals, and develop habits of life-long learning for
their children.

To support families committed to education and to
economic independence.
What is the Even Start Family Literacy Program?
The
purpose of the Even Start Family Literacy Program is to help break the
cycle of poverty and illiteracy by improving the educational opportunities
for families.
This is accomplished by integrating early childhood education,
adult literacy and adult basic education, and parenting education into
a unified literacy program.
Even Start is implemented nationally through cooperative projects
that build on existing community resources, creating a new range of services
for children families and adults.
The National Even Start Association
(N.E.S.A.) is a group
of professionals dedicated to supporting high quality family literacy
programs in all 50 states and the territories.
Who is eligible to join N.E.S.A.?

Program Directors/State Directors and Family Educators with an interest
in Family Literacy.

Adult educators and early childhood professionals.

Policy-makers and community-based organizations, Title I administrators
and teachers.

Parents and families.
-
Corporate sponsors interested in supporting families and children.
The National Even Start Association is a dedicated group which includes
interested parties who support the purposes of Even Start
The goal of our organization is to:

Ensure the continuity and quality of NESA leadership.

Generate awareness and support for Even Start Family Literacy Programs.
-
Provide professional services that support quality in Even Start
Family Literacy Programs.

Create a national credentialing system that assists programs to
meet statutory requirements for Even Start Personnel.
Quality
Services Provided by N.E.S.A Family Literacy Projects
Home-Based and Center-based
Activities
Home-based programs provide greater opportunity to tailor literacy services
to individual family needs in more informal settings.
Center-based activities offer experiences in literacy and language
development for children and work force skills for adults.
Quality Early Childhood Education
Joint parent/child literacy activities involve child development activities
for children and their parents such as reading, storytelling, art activities,
music, food preparation, and field trips.
Continuous,
Year-Round Parent Education and Adult Literacy Services.
Services include parenting support
and workshops on early childhood development.
Adult literacy training activities include basic skills, GED Certificate
of graduation, work force skills and services providing support for welfare
reform in local communities.
